Right of residence

It is important for victims of domestic abuse to seek in-person counselling. A conversation at the victim counselling centre does not lead to the loss of the right of residence. The counselling is confidential. The victim support centre does not inform anyone.

Right of residence in case of separation due to domestic abuse

If a person is in Switzerland because of a marriage and experiences domestic abuse, they may remain in Switzerland after the separation, depending on the situation. Every situation is different. It is therefore important to seek counselling.

The victim counselling centre can provide support: A specialist will explain the current situation and support the person concerned in their next steps. They can liaise with other counselling centres. Counselling is free of charge and confidential. Translation available.

Documenting abuse

It is important to have evidence of the abuse. For example: photos of injuries, screenshots of threats or verbal abuse on WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. The evidence should be kept in a safe place. For example, with a friend or at work.

It is also good if some people around you are aware of the abuse. For example, a neighbour or a colleague at work.
